Film Title in The Good The Bad The Ugly

The Good The Bad The Ugly.

Plot: A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

Font: The Opening sequence of The Good The Bad The Ugly shows a long opening sequence of many people involved with the film, the font used for the main actors (Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleff and Eli Wallach) is a traditional wild west font that can be found in many cowboy films as the font for wanted posters and signs for bars and banks. I think the font particularly relates to wanted posters and one of the character at the very beginning of the film is  recognised through a wanted poster. Showing the actors name in this wanted poster style can connote the idea of these actors playing gritty characters who live a life not abiding to the law.

Animation: The Animation is in sync with the music in the background, everytime the beat of the song changes a new font or animation appears, this editing technique creates tempo for the movie with the start of the credits slow before getting pace near the end of the sequence. The animation itself is paint brush strokes revealing each character and give a impression on who is The Good The Bad The Ugly.

Music: The Music is a very famous soundtrack that has three different versions one for each character. The music is meant to connote a coyote in general to relate to the setting the characters are in. The music in the opening sequences sounds quite heroic and creates a lot of attention everytime, especially when the howl takes place.

Lighting In Thirst

  • Plot: Through a failed medical experiment, a priest is turned into a vampire and is forced to abandon his old religious and human ways.

Lighting In Thirst Trailer:

Vampire:

  • Dark, Top Lighting And Back Lighting presented throughout the vampires appearance in the trailer, to connote the main character of the film unconventionally as an evil person and not good like most other films.
  • Top Lighting is used to show the vampire sucking the blood out of his victims, illustrating the main characters gruesome and and dark nature. Also the film is a horror and full of gore.
  • When the main character is the vampire, almost all of the scenes are in dark lighting to show that the vampire is the bad side of this character.
  • Bandages shown in a top lighting like a operating theater to connote how the character has changed (Into A Vampire) and through the bandages covering all of his face its almost like its covering the darker side of him, soon to be uncovered.
The Priest:
  • High key lighting at the beginning before he changes to the vampire, showing him as good and almost like a godly figure. When the main character is the priest this is his good side unlike the vampire which is his bad side.
  • The priest and vampire are two clear binary opposites:
  • The Priest: A gentle figure, who would not hurt anyone and follows under his religion.
  • The Vampire:  A violent figure, who sucks people blood in order to survive and does this at his own accord and does not consider his victims.

Brainstorming of Characters

This is brainstorming for character ideas. There are some conventional character ideas and we could also change these as they are just stereotypical ideas.

Brainstorming for Genre and Elements

Some evidence of brainstorming that was completed a long time ago

Purpose Of A Soundtrack

What Is the Purpose Of A Soundtrack?

  • Tension, used in many horror films to make the audience fear that something is coming which could result in what was expected or nothing happens till a moment later to surprise the audience. For example, Jaws is famous for it soundtrack, that creates tension as its implying that the shark is getting closer.
  • Identifying something, soundtracks can be used to identify a certain character in a film. The Good The Bad The Ugly's soundtrack uses the identity of each of the three main characters. A different instrument was used for each: flute for Blondie, ocarina for Angel Eyes and human voices for Tuco. To give a understanding to the audience to the fear and toughness each character had.
  • A soundtrack can also portray a type of emotion possible felt by a character to make it clearer to audiences to whats happening in a scene.
  • Many films are remember only because of there soundtracks, using a soundtrack can give emotions to the audience to remember the film and what the film is like through remembering the soundtrack, whether they remember it as scary, fun or sad.

How The Opening Could Pan Out

Ideas of how the film opening sequence could pan out, some ideas for different shots.

Brainstorm for Location

This is a brainstorm that was completed to give us some ideas of where we could film our opening sequence. We decided to film it at Joe's Dads lighting shop.

Gravity Film Titles (Prezi)

Thursday, 5 December 2013

Production: How it went.

We have now filmed just about all of our opening sequence, and any additions to filming would be for elements that we did not originally plan to include.

On the 8th, we filmed a lot of our sequence, even recording audio from the traffic outside so that we can overlay this onto our whole sequence, so that continuity is better as cutting to different shots won't sound so strange (e.g. hearing a car coming closer in one shot, and then cutting to another shot and the noise of the car gone).

We filmed many different shots from different angles and distances: Long shots, close ups, canted angle etc. But we didn't quite get things complete by the time that it was starting to get dark. Seeing as the shop is open Monday to Saturday, we came back on Sunday the 15th to complete our film. Learning our lesson from the week before, we decided to arrive at Spring Electrical at an earlier time than on the 8th - so that we could get everything filmed whilst it was still light outside.

Upon our arrival back at the shop, we noticed that a lot of the products that Spring Electrical sell, were now missing or in different places on the shelves, which would have affected our continuity if we just decided to continue on filming from the last week. Therefore, we filmed the whole opening sequence from scratch. Not only did we manage to film the whole opening sequence, but I feel as though we were able to improve on many shots from the week before. Still, we will look through all of the footage filmed when we go through the editing, and might pick out certain shots from footage filmed on the 8th which we think were better than shots on the 15th. Overall, we are progressing well and things are looking positive for our opening film.

Problems encountered:

Continuity from the week before - Solved by re-filming the entire sequence
Continuity in terms of audio of traffic - Solved by Overlaying a two minute audio clip of traffic outside, so that it all sounds more natural
Voiceover acting in dialogue between daughter and sales assistant - Solved by simply trying over and over again to get a natural sounding dialogue.
Acting for all characters on screen (apart from Phoebe's daughter character, as you only really see the back of her walking out of the shop so there isn't anything to criticize about her performance) - Solved by many retakes of shots, and even watching scenes with characters and reactions which were a little bit similar to what we wanted to portray in body language in our opening sequence.

Malignant Opening Sequence

Malignant
Definition:evil in nature or effect.
      Mise-en-scene.
An industrial area with a ghost/ monster presence. The rustiness and roughness of the site creates a feel of isolation, creating tension as the audience wonders what could happen to the character, as well as why the area is abandoned
Presents the audience with four teenagers that stumble across the site, connoting a conflict which creates intrigue. This is also use of dramatic irony, as the audience already knows that there is a paranormal presence/ entity.
The area is encapsulated by a barbed wire fence, which emphasizes that you cannot escape from the site, and connotes that the fence may be keeping something within.

Camera.
Camera Panning: Shows the Keep out sign across to building. Shows the danger and remoteness of the area.
Point Of View Shot: Used when approaching the girl. Puts in you in perspective of the character making you feel more vulnerable creating tension and fear on the audience.
     Sound.
Throughout the opening sequence there is a non diagetic eerie piano backing. This is conventional of horror films and creates an uncomfortable atmosphere with high pitched sharp violent sounds every so often.
When approaching the girl from a long-shot to a close up, the music quietens down before ultimately stopping. This builds tension as it creates a more exposed atmosphere for the audience, as they're no longer protected by the non-diegetic sound as the girl turns around, creating a climax of tension which had been building up from the start.
     Editing
The animation of the opening credits is very difficult to visualize. However this could connote the paranormal sideof the film, as the credits are designed to look mysterious/ghostly. As ghosts are difficult to see and you never see a ghost clearly.
The paranormal theme is further emphasized by the mysterious figure popping up, creating tension as the audience wants to see what this thing is.
           Horror/ narrative signifiers
  •     Ghostly antagonist
  •     Walking through the woods
  •     First victim in the first few minutes
  •     Helpless teenagers
  •     Mysterious music
  •     Point of view shoAnimation/ font design of opening credits – ghostly
           Enigmas
  •      What is the strange paranormal presence?
  •      Why is the area abandoned?
  •      What happens to the first character?
  •      What happens to the teenagers?
  •      Why is there a paranormal presence?

Titles for Opening Sequence

The title I created for the opening sequence is through using "Live Type" a software on the a apple macs to make fonts with special effects, different fonts and unique textures. My opening sequence is made up with each element of the it relating to the film.

  • The font: Yellow to show how the dealer is easily sticks out and is unnoticeable.

  • Texture: The texture is '' Fog Machine" to show how the dealer is trying to hide. This in a grey color compared to the yellow font showing how much the dealer sticks out.

  • Effects: The ''Mysterious Zoom'' was used to show how the dealer is almost seeping through what he's trying to hide.

Preliminary Task- Drug Deal

The preliminary task was the first time I ever got the opportunity to try out in filming.... and well it didn't exactly go to plan. Not using Final Cut, Digital Camera and in a short space of time, made it as bad as Jaws 4 and every M.Night Shyamalan film. The camera work started well but, certain clips for some reason didnt make the cut because they were too quiet as the camera positioning is vital to pick up sound. From this the opening sequence to the film was something im far more proud of and would rather watch any day. By doing lessons on lighting, editing and camera the preliminary task was useful in understanding the work needed to be put into a film to make it great.
